Marketing: A New Definition

What the hell is marketing anyway? Is it just about showing a little bit of leg in the doorway of a brothel to entice the clients in through mere curiosity of what they’ll get when they venture upstairs?

Another definition, one that I prefer is that the real job of your marketing communications efforts should be to bring the ideal buyers closer to you whilst pushing everyone else further and further away.

Someone once said that we should use something called Alienation. That is to deter the non-ideal folks from even listening to our messages. Let’s take this to the extreme.

Let’s step up to the front line of controversy and play dominoes with the world trade centre for a moment:

Once you’ve got a clear outline of the beliefs, values, motivations and interests of the people you want to attract you’ll bring them far closer to you by crafting your message so that everyone else thinks its riduculous or, better still doesn’t understand it.

Have you ever spoken to a Trekki? I dont understand a word these bizzarre creatures mumble on about through the glass.

When the message is specifically crafted to only appeal to the perfect people, you will have much more appeal and value to those perfect, chosen few. You’ll be like the mini Jesus only with more practical taste in footwear.
