I spend a considerable amount of time in the health and fitness industry. What is fascinating about this whole business is that its got very little to do with physical fitness and everything to do with motivating people to change their most closely held beliefs and habits.
Take a look at the picture to the right. That’s Rachel Fearon, on the left that’s how she was. A flubber-covered unhappy lass from the north east. Only a few months on and she looks like a different woman all together (the photo on the right).
Fearon is a woman on a mission. But it wasn’t just a case of cutting out the kebabs and cakes, her trainer had to totally change the way Fearon thought about the world. Many people are in shape and look amazing in their bikinis. Fearon was not one of those people. The only difference between them and her was the way they consider the world.
This is the kind of challenge we are faced with every time we persuade someone. They come to us with a certain set of beliefs and values. To get them to buy in to what we want them to do, say or invest in, we have to take their “map of the world” and change it.
For example – you sell Albino gerbils. Cos they’re the best kind, right? Ali comes in and wants a turtle. You need to sell her an Albino gerbil. If you can understand her beliefs about the turtles then you can apply some (if not all) of them to the gerbil.
“Why do you like turtles?”
“I love the smell”
“Albino gerbils friggin stink…take one”
“Okay, here’s a jillion pounds…keep the change”
Rachel Fearon is not finished her fat loss mission. She creates some of the most stunning, mouth watering healthy food i’ve ever come across and is a committed machine. You can follow her, her results and be inspired by this wonder-woman (who loves Johnny Bravo) here. Actually, once you’ve liked her page write something on her wall telling her I sent you – then maybe she’ll offer to cook for me.
